We made it through the first full week of the school year - I am happy and exhausted.
After TMC17 and a summer full of #MTBOS blog reading, I was excited to start the year with some new ideas along with my "tried and true" strategies. Below are a few of my favorites that debuted during the first week.
I tried Sara VanDerWerf's
Stand and Talk
rather than having students share with someone sitting nearby.
Wow! What a difference this small modifica
tion made. Students were more
engaged in their discussions and had more variety in who they talked
with.
We used a variety of activities from
YouCubed's Week of Inspirational Math (WIM) - they were a huge hit! I loved the teamwork and thinking that they
provoked. Not to mention the daily videos that reinforce important math messages such as "Speed is not important."

This visual timer has been a game changer! Using it has helped me to be more deliberate with my class time, so I'm not too rushed for a lesson close. Also, it's been a great way for students to keep an eye on how much time is left for particular activities during class. Love! |

It wouldn't have been a true first week post without some mention of the eclipse! We were not in the zone of totality, but still an amazing experience. |
